Elephant symbolism in Bangkok

I have often wondered about these kneeling elephant statues in Bangkok. This is the one I like best, on Silom Road. It’s kneeling in such a way that I was sure there had to be some kind of symbolism involved. I asked around but had trouble finding anyone who could tell me. Then I ran into someone who told me it symbolizes a welcome greeting, combined with something like “at your service”.

Welcome! How much more appropriate can you get?

Now I definitely have to find one and have it shipped to France. A big one made of stone that takes up real space in my office. Not as big as this one here, but not some little thing that fits in my suitcase and sits on a bookshelf.
